Dogara: sack governors who hijack council funds

Governors who refuse to conduct council elections should be removed from office for gross violation of the Constitution, House Speaker Yakubu Dogara has said. He accused governors of violating the 1999 Constitution by undermining local councils’ independence. The Speaker accused governors of using local government funds instead of making the money available to the councils. He described the state/local government joint accounts as “evil”, adding that governors have emasculated councils and turned them into cash cows. According to him, it is unfortunate that most governors have “pocketed” Houses of Assembly, making them toothless, hence their inability to impeach governors who violate the constitution. To Dogara, failure to conduct council elections amounts to “serious violation of the provisions of the constitution”, which he said was “one of the biggest grounds for impeachment”. He said: “As a matter of fact, joint account is one of the biggest evils because it gives

Oyo college shut over lecturers’ strike

The Oyo State College of Agricultural Technology (OYSCATECH) in Igboora has been shut, following a 21-day strike  by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) over alleged non-payment of  salaries. The union went on the warning strike after an emergency meeting held last Thursday, following the expiration of the ultimatum given management to pay workers nine-month arrears. The union said its members had been working without pay for months, noting that many of them are dying of hunger. ASUP said it had exhausted all avenues, including goodwill, to resolve the matter, but said strike was the only language understood by the management. In its letter to the registrar signed by the chairman, Afees Adeniyi, and Secretary, Mr O.O. Opadijo, ASUP asked the management to pay the nine months salary arrears to ameliorate members’ financial predicament, saying doing so would save its members from untimely death. “We demand constitution of a high-powered Internally Generated Reven

Breaking: Buhari to run for second term in 2019, Presidency confirms

ABUJA-With just one year and seven months into the four years t erm of the administration of President Muhammdu Buhari w hich will terminate in 2019, the Presidency has given sure i ndication that the President would seek a second term in office. It also vehemently dismissed comments that it would be a lonely w alk for the President, a development expected to serve as a p unishment for perceived bad governance. The refutation was a sharp reply to a statement credited a f ormer member of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, C PC, Alhaji Buba Galadima, that the people of Nigeria would a bandon Buhari should he choose to seek re-election. In a strong worded statement Monday night, the Presidency, through the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, M alam Garba Shehu, stated that the "suggestions that the m asses will desert President Buhari in 2019 was unfounded and u tterly ridiculous." The Federal Government has been advised to tax Nigerians for every call above three minutes.

The advice came from the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who says it will cushion the effect of the economic recession. Speaking at the Annual Bankers' Dinner in Lagos on Friday, November 18, 2016, Emefiele said the government could raise about N100billion as additional revenue by introducing the charge. In his words, " There are several ways we can raise additional revenue to finance the increased expenditure that is needed to engender fast and sustainable growth in the economy ." Speaking further Emefiele said, " I think we can consider introducing a negligible telecommunication surcharge to be entirely borne by the initiator of a call. In order to protect the poor and vulnerable amongst us, we could structure it to only take effect after the third minute of talk. "Some analysis have indicated that the government could earn about N100 billion per annum from this alone. Obviously this surcharge

I am amazed by what Pastor Adeboye, Bishop Oyedepo, others are doing – Benny Hinn

For 10 days beginning October 28, the oil city of Warri, Delta State was alive as the 2016 Jubilee Word Festival, held at the International Gospel Centre, headquarters of Papa Ayo and Mama Helen Oritsejafor's Word of Life Bible Church, featured local and international gospel preachers, including PFN National President, Rev. Felix Omobude; Bishop George Bloomer; Dr. Ini Okpon, Rev. Ayuk R. Ayuk and American televangelist, Rev. Benny Hinn. The theme of the conference was, Rock of Ages. After ministering for two days at the event, Benny Hinn who, in 2005, caused a stir after a failed crusade in Lagos where he screamed blue murder about shoddy preparations by the local organisers, spoke to Sunday Vanguard on the incident and many other issues about Nigeria. How do you describe your visit to Nigeria this time around? I have been to Nigeria now four times. The first was with Benson Idahosa back in the 80s, one other time here in Warri and I also
