ASUU Strike Union's meeting with FG ends in deadlock

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) did not reach an agreement on Earned Allowance due to lecturers despite the Senate's intervention.

The meeting, which was held on Monday, November 21, was convened by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETfund and chaired by its chairman, Senator Jibrin Barau. It was gathered that the Committee adjourned the meeting indefinitely after the two parties failed to reach an agreement on the matter.

In attendance at the meeting were the national leadership of ASUU led by its national president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi; the executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed; and the director general of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Mrs. Ahonu-Amazu, among others.

According to Leadership newspaper, the meeting ended at about
8.20pm on Monday. However, the one-week warning strike will end on Tuesday, November 22.

The union had vowed to follow it up with an infinite action if its demands are not met before the end of the warning strike.

Senator Barau told newsmen after the meeting that the peace meeting agreed on all issues at stake except the one on 'earned allowance', which made them call it off for further engagements‎ among all parties.

It was learnt that ASUU president and its delegation left the venue of the meeting without talking to newsmen.

*Averting another ASUU mega strike*

*A week ago, the Academic Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) served notice of its intention to embark on a one- week warning strike with effect from Wednesday, 16th November, 2016. Its President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, claimed that ASUU took the action after nationwide consultations with the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Union, though the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, insisted the Federal Government (ASUU members' main employer) was not notified.* *ASUU said its leadership came under great pressure from its members over pending issues such as the 2009 Collective Bargaining Agreement and 2014 Memorandum of Understanding, which were not properly implemented. These cover the areas of proper funding of universities (which went down to eight per cent in 2016 from 11 per cent in 2015, despite the fact that this year's budget was significantly higher at N6.06 Trillion compared to N4.4 Trillion of 2015); unpaid pension...

When Maria Grette first discovered that the "58-year-old Danish man" with whom she had fallen in love was actually a 24-year- old Nigerian "419" internet scammer, the 62-year-old Swede was distraught. But, soon, her feelings changed. "The most terrible thing was not that he had cheated me, but that he had lost his innocence," she said. She became consumed with what she describes as "a profound need to make a difference to the people of Nigeria". Ms Grette's relationship with Johnny (not his real name) began after an evening of fun and games with her girlfriends, during which they playfully created a profile for her on an online dating website. A few years before, she had gone through a traumatic divorce, and her friends teased her about finally starting a new relationship. But when the fun of creating her profile was over, ...

Oyo college shut over lecturers’ strike

The Oyo State College of Agricultural Technology (OYSCATECH) in Igboora has been shut, following a 21-day strike  by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) over alleged non-payment of  salaries. The union went on the warning strike after an emergency meeting held last Thursday, following the expiration of the ultimatum given management to pay workers nine-month arrears. The union said its members had been working without pay for months, noting that many of them are dying of hunger. ASUP said it had exhausted all avenues, including goodwill, to resolve the matter, but said strike was the only language understood by the management. In its letter to the registrar signed by the chairman, Afees Adeniyi, and Secretary, Mr O.O. Opadijo, ASUP asked the management to pay the nine months salary arrears to ameliorate members’ financial predicament, saying doing so would save its members from untimely death. “We demand constitution of a high-powered Internally Genera...
