The Federal Government has been advised to tax Nigerians for every call above three minutes.

The advice came from the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,

Godwin Emefiele, who says it will cushion the effect of the

economic recession.

Speaking at the Annual Bankers' Dinner in Lagos on Friday,

November 18, 2016, Emefiele said the government could raise

about N100billion as additional revenue by introducing the charge.

In his words, " There are several ways we can raise additional revenue

to finance the increased expenditure that is needed to engender fast

and sustainable growth in the economy ."

Speaking further Emefiele said, " I think we can consider introducing

a negligible telecommunication surcharge to be entirely borne by the initiator of a

call. In order to protect the poor and vulnerable amongst us, we could

structure it to only take effect after the third minute of talk.

"Some analysis have indicated that the government could earn about

N100 billion per annum from this alone. Obviously this surcharge will

mainly be borne by middle and upper class people since I do not know

many poor people who make calls for more than 3 minutes! "

Senate threatens to go on strike over rerun elections

Gives INEC Dec. 10 ultimatum to conduct polls From Fred Itua, Abuja The Senate yesterday issued the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) till December 10, 2016 to conduct the pending National Assembly rerun elections in Rivers State. Failure to adhere to the ultimatum, the Senate threatened to suspend plenary. It stressed that the non-representation of the state in the National Assembly was unconstitutional and condemnable. The Upper Chamber adopted the resolution following a motion sponsored by the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekwerenmadu and co-sponsored by the Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume. Troops intercept suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Borno

By Agency Reporter, Troops of 8 Task Force Division, Nigerian Army, on Thursday intercepted a group of suspected Boko Haram insurgents allegedly on a mission to loot logistics supplies in surrounding villages. Col. Sani Usman, the Director, Army Public Relations Department, made the disclosure in a statement issued to newsmen in Maiduguri. He said that the troops were patrolling the Monguno-Brimari road when the incident occurred. "On sighting the patrol, the insurgents engaged the troops in a shootout that lasted for about fifteen minutes before they were overpowered by the superior fire power of the patrol. "In the encounter, 2 insurgents were neutralised and their weapons including one FN rifle loaded with a magazine of 10 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one AK 47 rifle with 3 magazines were captured. "Also recovered from the insurgents were 2 motorcycles, drugs, wrappers and clothes," the statement said.
