The Federal Government has been advised to tax Nigerians for every call above three minutes.

The advice came from the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,

Godwin Emefiele, who says it will cushion the effect of the

economic recession.

Speaking at the Annual Bankers' Dinner in Lagos on Friday,

November 18, 2016, Emefiele said the government could raise

about N100billion as additional revenue by introducing the charge.

In his words, " There are several ways we can raise additional revenue

to finance the increased expenditure that is needed to engender fast

and sustainable growth in the economy ."

Speaking further Emefiele said, " I think we can consider introducing

a negligible telecommunication surcharge to be entirely borne by the initiator of a

call. In order to protect the poor and vulnerable amongst us, we could

structure it to only take effect after the third minute of talk.

"Some analysis have indicated that the government could earn about

N100 billion per annum from this alone. Obviously this surcharge will

mainly be borne by middle and upper class people since I do not know

many poor people who make calls for more than 3 minutes! "

ADB gives $600m to support Nigeria’s budget

By Omodele Adigun with Agency Report The African Development Bank’s board has approved a $600 million loan for Nigeria on Wednesday aimed at helping the nation to address its budget deficit , a senior bank official said. The loan is the first tranche of a total $1 billion budget support package. The second disbursement of $400 million is dependent upon the implementation of reforms, the bank’s Nigeria country director, Ousmane Dore, said. Dore said one of the main triggers for the release of the remaining tranche would be when the government spells out its plan for overcoming its current economic challenges. “The economic recovery plan that the government is working on must be a package of comprehensive reforms, including even exchange rate policy, the consistency with regards to the monetary policy and structural reforms,” he said. Oil leak from Agip’s field pollutes Otuokpoti community in Bayelsa – Best Nigeria News

Residents of Ekole Creek in Bayelsa on Wednesday reported a massive oil leak from an oil field operated by Nigeria Agip Oil Company, NAOC, in the state. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ekole Creek is around Agbura and Otuokpoti communities in Ogbia and Yenagoa local government areas respectively. They said the spill resulting from the leak destroyed farmlands and aquatic lives in the communities. The residents said that crude oil deposits from the spillage measured about five centimetre thick on the surface of the water. The incident caused some of the residents to troop out to scoop the flowing crude oil. A resident of Otuokpoti community, Cecilia Osain, said the spillage had negatively affected fishing activities in the river. According to her, those who went fishing came back with no catch as the crude oil has scared the fish, crayfish and shrimps away into the high sea beyond the reach of artisanal fishermen.
