Oil leak from Agip’s field pollutes Otuokpoti community in Bayelsa – Best Nigeria News

Residents of Ekole Creek in Bayelsa on Wednesday reported a massive oil leak from an oil field operated by Nigeria Agip Oil Company, NAOC, in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ekole Creek is around Agbura and Otuokpoti communities in Ogbia and Yenagoa local government areas respectively.
They said the spill resulting from the leak destroyed farmlands and aquatic lives in the communities.
The residents said that crude oil deposits from the spillage measured about five centimetre thick on the surface of the water.
The incident caused some of the residents to troop out to scoop the flowing crude oil.
A resident of Otuokpoti community, Cecilia Osain, said the spillage had negatively affected fishing activities in the river.
According to her, those who went fishing came back with no catch as the crude oil has scared the fish, crayfish and shrimps away into the high sea beyond the reach of artisanal fishermen.
Ms. Osain, who also scooped the crude, said bathing in the river is no longer safe for residents as those who did complained of itching all over their bodies.
She said that the community relied on the creek for drinking water and for domestic use.
Meanwhile, the people of Otuokpoti community have appealed to the government of Bayelsa to provide relief materials to ameliorate the plight of the people.
In a letter signed by their paramount ruler, Cousin Wongo, and Chairman, Community Development Committee, Simpson Isikpi, the community noted that the spillage polluted the entire river.
According to the letter, the incident has negatively affected the economic life of the people as the river serves as a major source of income to members of the community.
“We cannot drink water, we cannot bathe in the river, our aquatic life such as fish and animals are dying.
“We appeal to the relevant authorities to come to our aid,” the letter read in part.
They also appealed for the immediate cleanup of the river to enable the people resume their fishing activities.
Speaking in the same vein, the spokesperson of the youth wing of the Ogbia Brotherhood, Lamawal Wilfred, called on operators of affected pipeline to send experts to ascertain the cause of the leak.
He urged NAOC to prevent further pollution of the river which serves as their major source of water.
When a NAN Correspondent visited the community, residents were seen scooping crude into containers, while the whole air was polluted by the gas from crude oil.
Officials of NAOC declined comments when contacted for comments.
Filippo Cotalinni, Media Relations Manager at Eni, parent company of NAOC has yet to respond to a request for comments on the incident.

Abuja Airport threatened! as herdsmen, hawkers take over

As herdsmen, hawkers take over, enjoy field day By ROMANUS UGWU Rightly or wrongly, first time visitors form impression of their host country from their contacts at the airport. This is particularly true for those coming by air. Sometimes, this may end up as permanent impression about the host countries judging from the standard and organisation of their airports. The airport, especially the international wing, serves as the gateway or key indices to empirically assess and measure the infrastructural and development level of the country concerned. This accounts reason governments concentrate so much resource in standardizing and making the roads to the airport not only motorable but beautiful just to create the impression of a model city in the minds of the foreign and local visitors. However, the reverse is fast becoming the situation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja. The airport has become anything but model. It is now a common sight t...

It is disheartening to see Heartland relegated- Chukwu – Enugu News

Former Super Eagles Coach, Christian Chukwu, on Wednesday urged fans of relegated Heartland FC of Owerri to rally round to lift the club to regain promotion to Nigeria’s top flight football. Chukwu, a former interim coach of the club, speaking in Enugu said the relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after the 2015/2016 season was disheartening. Heartland finished the season on the 18th position on the log with 43 points after 36 matches. He said the club had not been relegated since 1976 when it was admitted to the NPFL, adding that something must have been fundamentally wrong for “a striving and notable club to go down this way’’. “I have been in Heartland and I know the players are hardworking and determined in their pursuit. “However, it is disheartening to see a club that has continued to do well all seasons and even represented Nigeria in many continental tournaments to be relegated,’’ he said. Chukwu urged well-wishers of the club to ral...
