Alleged N1.4 billion fraud: How OAU Vice-Chancellor got into trouble

The acting Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Anthony Elujoba, who is under investigation over alleged diversion of N1.4 billion of the university's fund, ran into trouble by drawing the remunerations of a substantive holder of his office, investigations  have revealed.

Mr. Elujoba and the university's bursar, Aderonke Akeredolu, were on Tuesday in Ibadan quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the allegation.

He was appointed acting vice-chancellor for a period of six months with effect from July 21.
According to the terms and conditions of the appointment as approved by the Federal Government, Mr. Elujoba's fringe benefits include N120,000 monthly as furniture allowance.
Investigations however revealed that part of the allegations against him in a petition to the EFCC was that he received over N7 million as advance payment of the allowance for the five-year tenure of a substantive vice-chancellor.

The petition alleged that the acting vice-chancellor and bursar diverted monies from the university's Fixed Assets and Endowment Fund, without approval from the Federal Ministry of Education and the Governing Council of the University, to pay themselves unapproved allowances, including the N7 million as furniture allowance to Mr. Elujoba.
Mr. Elujoba and Mrs. Akeredolu, who arrived the Iyaganku office of the anti-graft agency in Ibadan at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, were quizzed for some hours and released on bail.

Before their arrival at the EFCC offices, scores of workers of the university and supporters had besieged the premises in solidarity with the officials.
When contacted, the EFCC Head of Media in the zone, Ayo Oyewole, declined to give details of the allegations against the acting Vice-Chancellor.
He however confirmed that he was was released on bail while further investigation was continuing.
The spokesman of the university, Biodun Olanrewaju, has however defended the accused officials, arguing that the acting vice-chancellor could not have been involved in financial malpractice as he was not in charge of the university's finances.

"It is the bursar that is in charge of money, not the acting Vice-Chancellor. This is a man who does not even collect hospitality allowances or security vote as collected by other vice-chancellors," Mr. Olanrewaju said.

He said Mr. Elujoba was brought into the university to stabilise the institution at a time of crisis.
"As acting vice-chancellor, he does the same work as any vice chancellor. Forget about the title, he coordinates the affairs of the university just like a substantive vice-chancellor," he added.

Insinuating that the development had political undertones, Mr. Olanrewaju said Mr. Elujoba had already been recommended by the Senate of the institution as substantive vice-chancellor "with overwhelming majority of 295 votes against 8 votes for his opponent".

The university's spokesman also defended the loyalty demonstrated for the embattled vice-chancellor by workers at the EFCC office.
"You could see how all union members of the university stormed the Iyaganku office of EFCC in Ibadan to rally round him. That was to show that the man did not steal or embezzle as alleged," Mr. Olanrewaju stated.

INSIDE THE FORTRESS OF ASO ROCK

The Presidential Villa or Aso Rock as it is popularly known in Abuja is the seat of the Nigerian government. It is a place where the country’s “honey pot,” is domiciled. Naturally, people troop there in large numbers on daily basis to have a piece of the action. However, gaining access to the fortress is not an easy task. At any rate, visiting the Villa is no tea party. It is herculean. As your vehicle gets to the Three-Arms Zone, right from the back of the Federal Secretariat Complex overlooking the Eagle Square, you will notice the serenity of the environment. Then, as you descend towards the first roadblock manned by ...

“Covenant University’s School Fees Has God’s Approval, My Critics Risk God’s Wrath” – David Oyedepo

The Bishop of the Living Faith Church worldwide, has appealed to those  criticising the school fees charged by Covenant University to desist to avoid incurring the wrath of God. He said the critics were acting in ignorance and risked incurring the wrath of God. He said one of such critic smitten with a strange plague of chronic mouth odour over the act only received spiritual pardon following his confession and “my intervention before he was restored to dignity.” Oyedepo said the issue of school fees paid by students of the university was a godly agenda to meet the demands of raising godly children in an environment conducive for learning. He said such criticisms were products of ignorance as what students pay could not be compared with what obtained elsewhere that lacked facilities. “The school fees has Gods approval and is in accordance with the quality of facilities provided by the university in meeting the educational needs of the nation,” he said.

It is disheartening to see Heartland relegated- Chukwu – Enugu News

Former Super Eagles Coach, Christian Chukwu, on Wednesday urged fans of relegated Heartland FC of Owerri to rally round to lift the club to regain promotion to Nigeria’s top flight football. Chukwu, a former interim coach of the club, speaking in Enugu said the relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after the 2015/2016 season was disheartening. Heartland finished the season on the 18th position on the log with 43 points after 36 matches. He said the club had not been relegated since 1976 when it was admitted to the NPFL, adding that something must have been fundamentally wrong for “a striving and notable club to go down this way’’. “I have been in Heartland and I know the players are hardworking and determined in their pursuit. “However, it is disheartening to see a club that has continued to do well all seasons and even represented Nigeria in many continental tournaments to be relegated,’’ he said. Abuja Airport threatened! as herdsmen, hawkers take over

As herdsmen, hawkers take over, enjoy field day By ROMANUS UGWU Rightly or wrongly, first time visitors form impression of their host country from their contacts at the airport. This is particularly true for those coming by air. Sometimes, this may end up as permanent impression about the host countries judging from the standard and organisation of their airports. The airport, especially the international wing, serves as the gateway or key indices to empirically assess and measure the infrastructural and development level of the country concerned. This accounts reason governments concentrate so much resource in standardizing and making the roads to the airport not only motorable but beautiful just to create the impression of a model city in the minds of the foreign and local visitors. However, the reverse is fast becoming the situation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja. The airport has become anything but model. It is now a common sight t...
